Had a v interesting conversation with my friends today. How none of us have an issue being the primary breadwinner in a household if push comes to shove. I'm so proud of my lady friends tbh. This was barely a thing back in the day when people felt women should not work etc. And now, not only do most earn a lot, they out earn their partners too.
I was wondering where I stand in this. On one hand, I'm not materialistic in the sense that Idgaf as long as my needs are met. Having a decent life, being able to pay for things I consider normal is a must. But beyond that, I don't care. And yet, I would probably not fall for someone who isn't ambitious in my eyes. Like it's not even about how much they earn, but they have to have some sense of purpose in life. I will never fall for someone lazy or someone who is not a go getter in some form. Idc if it's ina field that doesn't pay much, say academia for eg. But they gotta want to do something that they consider significant. Beyond that, I wouldn't care. And on the other hand, if I had a more lucrative gig, I wouldn't really care about it as long as our values align. It's the same with Meg and Di and even A for eg. That's one thing I love about them all. They are all v gorgeous, which brings a certain social clout with it, yet they all chose partners that are similar to them in values and nothing else. I really, really love that. Even for me, while I've always only dated people I considered ambitious and smart, at the end of the day the differentiator has always been if values align or not. I never wanted to get married earlier, but now that I have overcome those weird fears around marriage, the idea of a traditional marriage does appeal to me. I don't want to be smarter than my partner or see him as less than me, for sure. So that probably does fall in a more traditional dynamic. But I would never ever settle for someone who doesn't have the same core values as I do, no matter whatever else their social circumstance. And I'm genuinely happy about that. Arrogant as it may be, I've looked down on many a business family kid cuz I always felt they were loserish to only depend on their family's wealth which they had no hand in attaining. Never once would I settle for idiots like that. But someone who is genuinely ambitious, smart, loyal....oh man. That alignment of values will deffo win me over. And the rest, I would deal with. Like idc about their past, Idc if they aren't the most romantic and all of that shit. I'm practical at the end of the day and I want a marriage to work if I decide to marry. And I'll do my best, which includes making sure he feels like a king and is happy with me. But what I won't accept is shitty behaviour. That's the deal. And in some sense all marriages are a give and take and this is simply what I'm happy to offer the man in my life. Loyalty, love, longevity. But in return he has to offer me stability, respect and consideration. I think that's a fairly good start point. Relationships are hard, but the ingredients that go into making them successful are a bedrock or consideration and a genuine desire to be the best for the other person and to take care of them. And it ties into my idea of a traditional man too. In a sense I like my men to have that sense of responsibility and stability. Wanting to take care of his family, being loyal, being nice... All that I want. Like K's marriage for eg. When they married, K was earning a lot more than A, was more mature. But he in turn was v good at being a good husband, being exceptional with her family, giving her that sense of security. And as he grew in his career, they had a kid, she took that role of a wife which is supportive of him. And today they are both grounded and happy. I want that for me as well. Love a good man, be supportive of him, and know that he is loyal to only me and is good to me and my dear ones. It's a simple ask, and I'd like that to be the norm for me. Hehe, who would have thought that an independent soul like me actually loves men who are rooted and grounded? But I do. Men like N actually. He may be a nutter when the stakes are low but his values I deeply admire. How he takes care of P, grounds her, takes care of their extended family everything. I love that. It's what I want too. Nothing flashy, but something that's enduring and people who have a long term view on life.
I love knowing the man I love is a bit old school, is protective of me, is concerned with ensuring me and our family have the best life he can provide for, and in turn I take care of him and us and our lil unit with all the fire and passion and dedication my soul can muster. It's what I truly want, just to be completely sure of him and his reliability and his love for me and I guess "us". Hehe, us. That would be absolutely fantastic. I'd love to finally find my one person and be able to truly belong to him - mind, body and soul. Idk anyone currently who fits that bill, or someone whose values and character are strong and steady to match mine, but I'm sure in due time I'll find the right match for me. I'm happy trusting that.
All the rest of it is just noise.
